Wind is the deciding factor for a lot of the bed material decisions we make on Lakeside's west shore. A mulch bed that would hold up fine on a sheltered inland lot can dry out and scatter within a season if it's catching steady wind off the open water.
Wind-exposed beds need heavier material
On lots with a clear, open view across the lake, we usually steer toward rock or at least a heavier, coarser mulch, since lighter bark mulch just doesn't stay put in that kind of exposure. It's not that mulch can't work here, it's that the wrong grade of it turns into a maintenance problem fast.
Established beds on older shoreline lots
A number of the older, narrower lots near the water have beds that have been in place for years, often under mature shrubs and trees that have grown in over time. Refreshing these usually starts with clearing old, compacted mulch and checking the soil condition underneath before deciding what goes back in.
Rock shifts, mulch needs more frequent refreshing here
Both materials still change over time, but the timeline shifts on an exposed lot. Crushed stone compacts and shifts a bit through its first winter as the ground freezes and thaws around it, and mulch on a wind-exposed bed typically needs refreshing more often than the same mulch would on sheltered ground.
Windbreaks change what a bed can handle
A lot with an existing row of trees or a fence line already blocking wind has more flexibility on material than a wide-open shoreline lot does. We walk the site and factor in what's already cutting the wind before recommending rock, mulch, or a mix of both across different parts of the yard.
Sourcing rock that matches the lake setting
Bigfork and Lakeside share a lot of the same regional stone suppliers, and we bring samples out to your lot before ordering, since color and texture read differently outdoors than they do stacked in a supply yard.
Delivery on tighter shoreline lots
Some of the older parcels close to the water have narrow access, which changes how material gets moved from the truck to the bed. We plan the drop point and handling before scheduling delivery so it doesn't turn into a bottleneck on install day.
If your beds are struggling against the wind or just look tired, we'll walk the property and tell you honestly what will hold up.
