Flathead Lake's west shore brings a wind pattern that most inland yards never deal with, and it changes how a patio actually gets used, not just how it looks. A patio catching the full brunt of an afternoon westerly gets sat on a lot less than one placed with some thought toward where the wind actually comes from.
Wind shapes the layout as much as the view does
On open, lake-facing lots, we often orient a patio off the direct wind line or build in a low wall or screen to break it, rather than centering everything on the view and dealing with the wind later. A patio nobody wants to sit on because it's constantly windy isn't doing its job, no matter how good the sightline is.
Narrow shoreline lots need a tighter footprint
Several of the older platted parcels close to the water in Lakeside sit tight between neighboring properties, with limited room to work. On these, we design a smaller, efficient patio sized to what the lot actually allows, rather than a sprawling layout that would crowd the house or the setback line.
Lots set back from the highway have more room
Property up from Highway 93, away from the immediate shoreline, tends to be newer and roomier, often with real grade change built into the site. These lots can usually support a bigger patio, sometimes broken into a couple of connected areas, and grade is more likely to call for a stepped design than a tight lot down by the water.
Base work doesn't skip a lot because it's small
Whether the patio is a modest shoreline footprint or a bigger layout up the hill, the aggregate base underneath still has to be built to handle freeze-thaw cycling every winter. That doesn't change because a lot is tight or the patio is small, and skipping it is still the fastest way to a heaved or settled surface.
Walkways that hold up to lake wind
A walkway connecting a driveway to a lakeside path or dock area gets more direct wind and moisture exposure than one tucked closer to the house. We grade and set those sections carefully so standing water and ice don't collect on a surface people are walking across regularly.
