What Polymeric Sand Is Supposed to Do

Spring, summer, and early fall are the right windows here. Installing late in the season, when overnight temperatures are already dropping toward freezing, risks the sand not curing fully before the first hard freeze finds it, which sets a joint up to fail in its first winter instead of its fifth.

Cold and moisture affect more than just joint sand. Signs Your Joints Are Failing

Hairline cracks running along the joint lines, sand that's visibly washing out after rain instead of staying compacted, and small gaps opening between pavers that weren't there the year before are all signs joint sand is failing. Catching it early matters. Water that gets into an open joint has a more direct path down into the base than water hitting the sealed joint surface, so a small cracking problem left alone tends to accelerate the exact base issues that caused the cracking in the first place.

Refilling vs. Rebuilding

If the base underneath is sound, cracked or washed-out joints can usually be cleaned out and refilled with the right product without touching the pavers themselves. That's a straightforward fix. If the cracking traces back to a shifting or poorly compacted base, refilling the joints treats the symptom without fixing the cause, and the same cracking will come back the following winter.
